ANCESTRY VISA
Many applicants from Commonwealth countries who can prove their descent from a grandparent born in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man may be eligible to migrate to the UK for a period of five years on a UK Ancestry Visa.
The Ancestry Visa entitles you to seek employment in the UK for a period of up to five years and will not carry the restrictions as a UK work permit. Please note that you will have to prove your relationship, and this may require spending a lot of time hunting for old marriage certificates, birth certificates, etc.
Eligibility Criteria
- To obtain an Ancestry Visa it is necessary for you to fulfil the basic prerequisites set out by the UK Immigration Authorities. You must be from a Commonwealth country, aged 17 or over and have a grandparent who was born in the UK.
- You must be able to support yourself and any dependants without access to public funds and are willing and able to work. It is advantageous, but not necessary, to have a firm offer of employment in the UK.
After five years continuous stay in the UK on an Ancestry visa you may apply for apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain and British Nationality as long as you continue to meet the requirements of your Visa and demonstrate that you have been employed and not traveled outside the UK for longer than the allowed time periods.
